Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3!.2 kilometres (2!.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8!.1 mi) north of Salisbury!. One of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones!. Archaeologists believe that the standing stones were erected around 2200 BC and the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC!.

Stonehenge is also mentioned within Arthurian legend!. Geoffrey of Monmouth said that Merlin the wizard directed its removal from Ireland, where it had been constructed on Mount Killaraus by Giants, who brought the stones from Africa!. After it had been rebuilt near Amesbury, Geoffrey further narrates how first Ambrosius Aurelianus, then Uther Pendragon, and finally Constantine III, were buried inside the ring of stones!. In many places in his Historia Regum Britanniae Geoffrey mixes British legend and his own imagination; it is intriguing that he connects Ambrosius Aurelianus with this prehistoric monument, seeing how there is place-name evidence to connect Ambrosius with nearby Amesbury!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Stonehenge is one of many henges across Britain!. Due to the fact it was built before written records began it's hard to say what it was originally for!.

It's been dated as being started around 3,500BC, 5,500 years ago, but was probably a place of importance before then!.

Stonehengewas built in phases over at least 1,000 years!. with each generation adding there bit to it!.

As the original builders were agricultural the summer and winter equinoxes would have been times of importance, one being the height of growth and one heralding the new year!.

Ceremonies would have ben held there, the reason for the ceremonies would changes as beliefs changed through the centuries as different religions developed!.

It's as mystical as any man made structure, like the White House or Yankee Stadium!.

King Arthur was a legend created by a French writer based on British fokelore, the Druids came much later than Stonehenge, but they may have adapted it to their own use!.

if you ever get the chance it's an impressive place to visit, photographs don't do it justice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What is Stonehenges!?

Like all henges, Stonehenge is a place of worship and an astronomical calendar!.

Who built this place!?

Stone Age man built this place, specifically druids!. Though, there was one grave on the site that proved that a wealthy outsider probably financed it!. He was adorned with metals that could've only come from the mainland Europe!.

How [old] is it!?

The structure was built over a very long period, however the earthwork that surrounds it (the oldest portion) has been dated to around 3000 bce!.

Is it true that the place is mystical!?

It certainly is mysterious!. Firstly how the builders were able to move such a massive set of stones from such a distant quarry, second how precisely the blue stones line up with astronomical events!. However this question is entirely subjective!.

What do people celebrate in winter and summer!?

To this day believers and admirers flock to the site to celebrate the winter and summer solstices!.

What are the relationship between Arthur King, Druids and Stonehenge!?

As far as I know there is none!. Some have suggested that druids have no connection to Stonehenge at all, however this is unfair!. The original project was proto druidian to be sure!. However, subsequent phases that make this structure so identifiable are druidic in nature!. Historical Arthur was a Roman citizen, probably a governor cut off during the Hunnic advances!. He certainly would've been in contact with Stonehenge and druids, but that is as far as it goes as far as I know!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Shadowwhatever,I challenge you on that one 'it was built in the 20's! Another wild conspiracy theory! I also have pictures of the LIMITED restoration in the 20's and of the larger one in the late 50's!. The stones WERE NOT 'all fallen' by any means! TWO trilithons collapsed in HISTORICAL times & were noted by the antiquarians of the day-1 large inner one in the late 1700's,and one in the outer ring which fell in a storm at the very end of the 19thc!.Both were well documented as to their original positions!. These two trilithons were re-erected in their ORIGINAL STONEHOLES in the late 50's (holes from stones or even wooden posts DO NOT vanish over time!) In the 20's the main restoration was the straightening of the remaining stone of the great Trilithon which was ready to come down, taking the neighboring tall grooved bluestone with it!.
The best evidence of course is a painting from the mid-1700's,done before the fall of the large inner trilithon, which shows a Stonehenge VERY MUCH as we see it today!. Certainly if archaeologists were eager to destroy their careers by sticking stones up willy nilly then they must have got very bored anyway,as they left loads of them lying on the ground,LOL!
And as for P'tang, the reason the govt stopped the festival was that they were told by archaeologists that more damage had been done in the last 300 years than the last 3000! Yup, stoned people swinging off lintels,graffiti-ing and chipping at stones, putting tent pegs in archaeologically sensitive ground, treasure hunting, etc had to stop!. Is desecration of a sacred site your idea of fun!? There was recent worldwide outrage when 2 morons chipped off a bit of the heelstone at night!. that sort of thing and worse went on pretty much every day when the site was unprotected!.
anyway, I digress and will now answer the Asker--
1) a megalithic stone circle on salisbury Plan, England, unique in the world due to its lintelled arches
2) neolithic farmers and bronze age tribal people
3) it was built in several stages!. The oldest, the bank and ditch, is over 5000 years old!.
4) there is an atmosphere there, certainly!. I have received an electric shock from unknown source near the heelstone!.many pagans consider it holy ground
5) summer and winter solstice!. death & rebirth of the sun
6) There are king Arthur legends associated with the stones but of course the temple was in ruins by Arthur's time (if indeed he ever lived!.) Merlin was said to have brought the stones there from Ireland!. This could be a vague folk memory of the bluestones being brought from the west (they came from the Presceli mtns in wales!.) modern days druids visit Stonehenge but there's no evidence any ancient druids did--it was abandoned nearly 1000 years before their cult flourished!. They were more into oak groves than stones anyway!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Stonehenge as we know it was built in the 1920s!. Before that it was just a pile of stones!. I have photographs of the work being carried out in the 20s, with heavy lifting gear!. What it looked like before is anybody's guess!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
