1) The student movement in the 1960s had two purposes: to achieve civil rights for African Americans and to protest the Vietnam War draft!. In early 1960s, college students were involved in the civil rights movement and they did many things from participating in student lunch counter sit-in's to helping black voters in the south register!. In 1960 African American students began protesting segregation in public facility by sitting in the "white" lunch counters in Delis and cafeterias!. Although the whites refused to serve them, they would not free up the seats for the whites!. Due to their their effort, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which banned segregation in public accommodations was passed!. In the same year, many college students, both whites and black, volunteered to help southern blacks (who had long been oppressed by Jim Crow Act) register to become a voter!. In the event known as Freedom Summer, three college students, Chainy, Goodman, and Schwamer, were murdered by racist whites when they were helping blacks register in mississippi!.
Skipping on to Student movement following the beginning of the Vietnam War!. The original draft required men from age 18 to 26 to enlist for the military but it gave an exemption to young men who were enrolled in a university!. As a result, many people battled for a acceptance into a university to avoid the draft!. Then in February 1966, the Johnson administration changed deferment for college students, giving exemptions only to students with high academic standing!. Thus on, the student antiwar movement intensified and grew increasingly violent as students tossed their draft cards into bonfires and burned college ROTC buildings!.
The hippy lifestyle does not necessarily have to do with the antiwar movement!. It was just a new lifestyle maverick youth adopted to rebel against conventional culture (the flapper style of their parents' generation) It was perhaps inspired by the anti-war and pacifist views of many young people!.

2) Most of the Civil Rights Act (1964, 1965, 1968) were passed during Johnson's administration except for the Civil Rights Act of 1957!. Kennedy, on the other hand, was not as involved in the civil rights movement as he was in the Cuban missile Crisis and the race to the moon!. However, a couple important events did occur when he was president!. The March in Washing D!.C!. in which Martin Luther King Jr!. gave the "I have a dream" speech was a result of JFK's proposal on a civil rights bill that would guarantee equal access to all public accommodations Later Johnson signed the bill into a law!.

3)Johnson was the one who signed all those civil rights bill into laws!. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned most discrimination in public accommodation and established Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to ensure fair treatment in employment!. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 eliminated voter literacy tests!. Finally the Civil Rights Act of 1968 prohibited discrimination in the sales and rental of most housings!.

4) Martin Luther King Jr!. became first involved in the Civil Rights movement during the Montgomery Bus Boycott in which he led the group of protesters!. His philosophy of protest was civil disobedience, that of which is inspired by Gandhi!. After the bus boycott, he co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) with other civil rights leaders and minister!. With SCLC, he planned protests and demonstrations throughout the south!. King was the most influential leader in the Civil Rights movement!. His peaceful style of protest and his inspirational speeches urging blacks to achieve freedom through patience was widely renouned in contrast to other radical Civil Rights leader such as Malcolm X who preferred a more violent style of protest!.

5) The Watergate Scandal occured in June of 1972 when Nixon was president!. Because Nixon was highly paranoid and feared a loss of presidency, he was determined to get reelected!. As a solution, Nixon secretly supported the Committee to reelect the president (CRP) headed by James McCord, a former CIA agent!. AT 2:30 AM, June 17, 1972, a guard at the Watergate complex caught five men breaking into the campaign headquarters in DNC!. Thy were trying to photograph document outlining Democratic Party strategy and to place "bug" on the office telephones!. Although Nixon wasn't involved in the break-in, he was involved in the cover-up of the incident, shredding all incriminating evidence !. Despite the scandal, most public dismissed the idea that Nixon was a criminal and in November 1972, he won a landslide victory against McGovern!. In the summer of 1973, John Dean, Nixon's Lawyer, testified and made allegation that Nixon was involved in the coverup!. His allegation was backed by tapes from the white house that recorded all of Nixon's conversations!. In an effort to defend himself, Nixon ordered his Attorney General to fire the prosecutor, Archibald Cox!. In an event known as "Saturday Night Massacre", The Attorney General Elliot Richardson refused to fire cox, resigned, and was replaced by the deputy general, William Rockelshaus who also refused the order and resigned!. Finally his replacement Solicitor General, Robert Bork, fired Cox!. Despite that, the new prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, was equally determined to prove Nixon guilty and in July 1974, the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 against Nixon and the Tapes and charged him with felony of obstructing Justice!. Before the House was able to vote on teh impeachment, Nixon resigned from office and vice president, Ford, pardoned Nixon for his crime upon becoming the new presidentWww@QuestionHome@Com
