That's a good question!. Japan had been at war with China since 1937, but she didn't declare war against Britain or the United States until 7 December, 1941!. You could argue for either, but I would go with 7 December, 1941, since the war is usually considered to have begun in September 1939!.

Japan rapidly industrialized in order to not become a colony of a Western power!. In order to do this, she borrowed science, technology and ideas from the Western powers!. For example: Imperial Germany had the best army in the world, so Japan copied her example!. In order to supply her industries' demands, she needed to secure sources of raw materials, and conquered much of the South Pacific and China!. She seized Manchuria for raw materials, Indonesia for oil, etc!.!.!. Japan declared war on the United States and Britain because she figured that if she could strike hard and fast enough, her enemies would sue for peace and let her keep all of her posessions!. Moreover, Roosevelt had already threatened to declare war if Japan did not leave China and Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos)!.

I hope that helped!. I can clairify anything here that you don't understand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, really, with the control of Korea in the early 1900s, and the economic problems driving militaristic actions and assassination throughout the 1920s, and the beginning of war with China in 1931, one could say that Japan really started their involvement in creating the Pacific part of World War II since the beginning of World War one!.

Why!? The Showa Emperor, Hirohito, desired to rule the world, and pushed his advisors and Prime Ministers to try to establish a Japanese Military Hegemony over the Pacific Nations for starters!. In 1940 they signed a pact with the Nazis to carve up the world between them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Japan had really entered Manchuria and China in earnest in 1931!. They did not declare war, because that would have suggested to some that they should obey the laws of warfare!. You might date their involvement from there, or from the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, or the attack on Pearl Harbor!. Take your pick and you can make a good argument!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They invaded Manchuria in 1932 which, it could be argued, was really the start of WW2!.
More conventional thinking puts their entry into the war at Pearl Harbour!.
They wanted to establish an empire in the Asia- Pacific region, inspired by the English\European example of colonialism!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were three different time frames!. Unfortunately there's no real clear consensus!.

In 1931 they invaded Manchuria!. In 1937 they invade China, which resulted in the US stopping all trade with them!.

Obviously from our perspective, they/we began hostilities in 1941 (Japan invades Pearl Harbor)!. Which is when WWII hostilities began between US and them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
