The first culture to flourish in Ukraine was the Cucuteni culture!. During the Iron Age the land was dominated by the Cimmerians, Scythians, and Sarmatians, and the the land was part of the Scythian Kingdom!. During the 6th century BC, many Greek, Roman, and Byzantine colonies were set up in Ukraine that lasted until the 6th century AD!. The land was next dominated by the Bulgar tribes until they left the land and Khazars took power!.

During the 10th and 11th centuries, the land was largely inhabited the the Rus' peoples!. The Rus' in the area formed the largest European polite of the time and became known as Kieven Rus'!. The Rus' laid the foundation for a national identity for Ukrainians and many modern Ukrainians consider the Rus' the predecessors of their own people!. The Rus' are also viewed in the same way by modern Belarusians and Russians!.

On a side note, there is an interesting little legend concerning this!. The legend says that, once upon a time there were three brothers named Lech, ?ech (or Czech), and Rus!. The three were out hunting one day when each chose a seperate path and eventually the three founded their own kingdoms!. Lech founded the kindom of Lechia, which is another name for Poland!. ?ech settled in Bohemia, which is part of the Czech lands, and Rus creates Ruthenia, which was later divided into the countries of Belarus, Urkrain, and Russia!. The legend suggests a common ancestry of Poles, Czechs, and Ruthenians (modern Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians)!. It also shows that, in the 13th century, three different Slavic peoples were aware of being racially and lingustically interrelated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
