Question: What was Trial by Ordeal that used to take place in churches!?
I think it happened in Saxon times, and the churches were used as courts!.

There were a number of possibilities!. The accused could fight with a designated warrior, who would be the representative of the church/court!. If the accused won, he would be judged innocent!. If he lost he would probably be dead anyway, so that wouldn't matter!. Interestingly enough, one of the Pope's titles is: Defender of the Faith, although in these cases he was not the one doing the defending but had a surrogate to do that!.
Other possibilities were trial by fire - placing one's hand in a flame and if it didn't burn or blister, you were innocent and other odds and ends of that sort!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
