One should not overlook that bombing of German, Italian and Japanese cities by the Allies was an important part of destroying the capability of those countries to wage an offensive war!. Bombing cities is an effective way of projecting power, but it is, unfortunately, a particularly terroristic thing to do!. One cannot take any sort of high moral ground if one bombs civilians (even if yours were bombed first)!. In an asymetrical war -- a powerful country with overwhelming military superiority versus an enemy that hides among the indigent population -- the use of air power to try to destroy militants creates civilian casualties far out of proportion to the military advantage gained!. Civilian casualties produce more militants!.!.!.!.More militants produce more civilian casualties!.!.!.!. The US and its allies saw, at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, that Japanese civilians were unwilling to surrender or throw themselves on the mercy of the Allies!. (Perhaps they thought the Allies would treat them with the compassion shown by the Japanese soldiers in China, for example) The Allies felt sure that an invasion of the main islands of Japan would result in the loss of as many a one million Allied soldiers, plus the deaths of several million Japanese civilians, minimum!. Dropping the A-bombs, killing 200,000 plus civilians, was more merciful to both sides because it ended the war!. One wonders where the humanity of the German and Japanese governments and armies went during WWII!. Germany was responsible for a minimum of 15,000,000 civilian casualties!. Japan slaughtered Chinese and Koreans and Phillipinos as though they were sub-humans, like their German Ally!. In the years following WWII, one could hardly blame the U!.S!. for the A-bombs, given the level of beastiality of their enemies!.
