Hi! Interesting question you've got there!
There is not only 1 cause, but several ones and approximately of equal importance, but there are some more important!. I'll try to cover everything!.
Religion: It was not a big cause, but cannot be forgotten!. The christian church had almost all Europe at his hands so there was not much trouble converting people!. Since Africa was discovered, the christian church has always encouraged European presence in Africa to convert African peoples!.
Intellectual: Not very important since African people had more superstitious and natural beliefs, Europe has never been interested in African technologies!.
Military and Politics: It is similar to the New World!. New territory meant more power!. European nations started raiding, conquering and colonizing Africa for power!.
Economy: Gold can be found in South Africa!. Most European nations raced to colonize South Africa for economic power!. More jewels can be found in other parts of Africa, so the 'race' was not limited to the South territories!.
Social: Probably the least important!. In fact, I cannot find any 'social cause'!.
I hope this helped!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Unfortunately religion!.

There seemed to be a Missionary zeal to convert anyone that stood still and to wear western clothes because to the Missionaries, nakedness was ungodly!.

The indigionous culture/history/language was deemed to be inferior and every thing became centred on Eurocentric thought!.

This obvious over a period of time became resented and other aspects of the "invasion" of Africa kicked in, conflict for increased territory; controlled politically from somewhere else; all of these affected the economy of Africa which became almost dependant upon the West for their livelihood!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
