Yes, attempts would be made to track them down!.

One famous escapee is Alexander Pearce!. He escaped along with seven other convicts!. When recaptured over three months later, he claimed to have cannibalised some of his fellow escapees in order to survive!. He escaped again with another convict, and when again he was re-captured, he was found with the other man's remains in his pockets, thereby proving his cannibalism (and this was despite having other food available)!. Pearce was hanged!.

Another famous escapee was Martin Cash!. He escaped several times, including from the seemingly impregnable Port Arthur!. Eventually he was sentenced to hang, but was given a last minute reprieve, and finally finished his sentence and was released!.

As for the Aborigine question: many Aborigine communities were vitually wiped out!. I would say the hostility was all one-way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They did try to track them down, but if the convict was smart he or she would head to the Blue Mountain ranges where they would not attempt to go past and so that would buy them their freedom; but you needed to have a hell of a lot of courage to do so!.
The aboriginals did not like the newcomers!. They were not used to having to give up what was taken from them, and they were seen as sport for the people who enjoyed hunting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No they would not!. at the beggining there was a little bit of a search, but as time went on, the convicts were given to a settler for working purposes!. in some cases, a convict could be given to his wife as a house helper, meaning they could live and work in harmony!. there are also stories of convicts running onto a boat and being accepted as free workers, meaning the captain would turna blind eye to their convict outfits and names!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
