Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
1!. Operation Sea Lion envisioned landings at or near Portsmouth, Bexhill, Dover, Brighton and Ramsgate!.

2!. The Luftwaffe came from a variety of directions!. Actually, some bombers attacked England from Norway (too far for any fighter escort other than Me-110's)!. Specifically, they came from the Southwest, southeast and northeast!.

3!. Why did he need to defeat the RAF!? Several reasons:
--German assault doctrine relied heavily on Falschirmjaeger (ie: Paratroopers)!. At least one division of paratroops were to be dropped initially during the invasion with others held in reserve to be deployed once the Germans got off the beaches!. Those transport aircraft would be have been plucked from the sky if the RAF was still a serious force by invasion time!.
--German surface naval capacity was minimal!. They lacked open-water barges for troops and sufficient surface ships!. So a substantial percentage of supplies and reinforcement would have to come by air!.

Additionally, Hitler needed to defeat the Royal Navy!. And his only hope to do so was with air superiority!. Thus, he needed to defeat the RAF in order to defeat the Royal Navy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Straight over from Calais!. Hitler had little sea power and needed to minimize time at sea!. The whole Battle of Britain was to gain air superiority, so that the British navy could not intervene!. Hitler did nearly defeat the RAF!. The British were losing when their bases and fighter command were the targets!. A German bomb crew became lost and accidentally bombed London!. The British bombed Berlin in turn!. Hitler became enraged and ordered the targets changed to the cities and in turn fighter command got a breather and was able to regroup!. It was true they were giving as good as they got!. But people did not realize many RAF victories were Luftwaffe bombers!. The Luftwaffe fighter pilots were shooting down more British fighters!. The real shortage was pilots!. Many of the British losses were of skilled and able fighter pilots and they were unable to replace the dead and disabled at the same rate!.!.!.!.thus switching targets from fighter command primarily to the cities literally saved the battle for the British!. Goering also ordered close escort tactics for the bombers!. This meant just that!. The fighters were tied to eye sight of the German bombers!. It was great for morale of the bomber crews but actually led to greater losses!. Fighter planes are hunters and should sweep ahead clearing the sky!. Stopping this allowed the British plenty of time to form up and pick where to attack!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hitler himself had no great plans for a military style invasion of these shores, instead he considered a siege type offencive more practical to meet the ends of establishing a master race on this island which in turn would then seek to rule the world (remember at that time we had a pretty big Commonwealth which would have automatically come with the prize,at least in his mind)!.What he had to do though was bomb the British into submission,a task made somewhat difficult by the RAF and the resolve of a bloody minded Prime Minister!.This lead to what history has dubbed "the finest hour" though the reality was a little to close to call for if the axis resources had not been diverted to the newly opened eastern front and North Africa proving to be a little more of a stumbling block I may well be writing this in GermanWww@QuestionHome@Com
