Because of Britain's NATO commitments we were on station with missiles ready to launch!. Interesting moments!. USSR had missiles in Hungary, and West Germany, pointed at my country [England] 3 minutes from launch to hit!. Live with that 24/7 for years on end and say they never meant to start a war!. What they never wanted to do, was commit mutual suicide, It was the threat of nuclear anihilation that stopped them, nothing else!. Be assured their aim was to spread communism throughout the world by ANY means!. Every russian leader since Lenin had stated that was their aim!. You'd have been totally irresponsible and stupid not to have taken them seriously!. The Cold War was the most sucesful war ever won!. Apart from a few collisions at sea, and submarine collisions under the North Polar ice, no serious damage was done, few lives were lost and the World avoided a nuclear war!. We did it by sending them broke trying to match our technology!. Beats the crap out of shooting at each other with Inter-continental balistic missiles imho!.
