13 years after the Declaration of Independence, he was president in 1789 where he was given a ceremony in new york city for his coronation!. (There was no White house til 1810's to 1820's) Yes he is the first president under our government documents!. Not sure what washington's family background, possible he was black, not completely sure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was just under 13 years from the point of the Declaration of Independence being ratified and signed to when Washington was inaguarted as the First President of The United States!.

However, if people wanted to be technical, there were President's before Washington!. When we were still colonies prior to the signing of the Declaration, as well as after the signing, the President of the Congress was the presiding body over the affairs of the body!. A total of 14 men held the title of President before George Washington did!. Their power was miniscule at best though!. They had less power and authority than a Governor or an individual state did!.

Washington was the true first President of the United States of America!. He was elected to be in the highest office with the most power to make decisions for the betterment of the country!.

**EDIT**

Hanson may have served a full term as the President of the Congress, but as I said previously, President of the Congress had less power and authority than a Governor or the individual states!. So don't make it out to be that Washington wasn't the first!. Based on the Bill of Rights and The Constitution, Washington was the first President with full Executive Powers in the country, thus making him truly our first President!.

And as for punkrockforever's answer, the White House was being built in the end of the 1790's and President Adams was the first President to live there, he only served from 1797-1801, so it was built a lot earlier that the 1810's!.

It was rebuilt in the 1810's after the War of 1812 happened when the British overtook Washington and set the entire city on fire!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
