I have never been to India, but I have always wanted to - in fact, I think I am going to India next year with my family :)

Anyway, I think you Indians seem fine to me!. Sometimes migrants from that part of the world (not just India, but a lot are from India) annoy me, as they come here and expect to do what they want and expect the government to follow their rules - it's our country, why should we change!? You came here!.

But I suppose they aren't living in India, so may be slightly different!. But yeah, you seem fine and your country seems incredible!. It has a lot of history, culture and incredible places to visit!.

One thing I will say though - why are some people holding a grudge against our occupation of you!? Most of the people of that era are probably dead anyway - now we don't own you so get over it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ok, Im only 13, and never been to India so I cant really judge you or your country!.!.
But, you don’t really bother me… I personally think its really harsh the way some people judge because of colour of the skin!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Generally people in Britain do not have any problem with India or Indians!.

However Pakistanis living in Britain are not well liked by many people!. This is mainly because of extreme Islamic beliefs, support for terrorism, high crime rate, low unemployment, and the fact that many Pakistanis refuse to fit in to British society!.

Some uneducated people think all South Asians are the same, so sometimes Indians and Sri Lankans are wrongly put into the same category as Pakistanis and Bangladseshis!.

With regards to the British Empire - Most educated people understand that both good and bad things occurred as a result of the Empire, this is true of the Empire in India also!.

Some of the good things were the introduction of Rail and Road networks, the Creation of a modern Industrial and Manufacturing Infrastructure, An Advanced and efficient Civil Service, the intoduction of a Judiciary and Laws (banning sutee etc), Advanced Agriculture and the freeing of Hindu majority from oppressive Muslim(Moghul) minority rule!.

Some of the bad things were, as you have mentioned, the killing of peaceful protesters on some occassions(though this was rare), the attitude that some Britons had to indian people(although many also loved India, and became Indianized), and worst of all, abandoning India after WW2 too early! This policy led directly to the mass killing between Hindus/Sikhs and Muslims that cost many lives!. also, allowing Pakistan to exist was wrong!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well indianers I don't know where to begin!. The british never put up signs saying "Dogs and indians are not allowed" I think that another internet myth!. There was a incident in china where a sign out side a club said "no dogs and chinese allowed" but im pretty sure that was the only one"

Second the jaliawala bagh killing better know as the armistated massacare invovled the deaths of between 379 people the official figure and reliable unofficail estimate of up to 600 not 4000!.

they were not there to listen to some leader they were actually there for a sikh religous festival!. But there had been violent riot in the city for three day 500 hundred building had been burned down 50 people killed and posters were being put up calling on indian to rape british women!. a general curfew with threat to shoot any one attending a gathering had been ordered and but the people atending the festival were either unaware of the order as many of them were from out of town or were simply ignored it!. Im not saying this excuse the event it doesn't but there was more going on then british simpy shooting into a crowd!.

also General Diar was not a considered a british hero he was condemed but the house of commons and winston churchil and most newspaper!. The house of lords approved of his action as a necarry step to restore order as did a few newspaper and many promiant indian in armisated as the rioting end after that day but the condemantion was more prevalant then the praise and diar was dismissed!.

i will finish this of by saying in the future try knowing some history before lecturing other on it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From the top!. These are only my opinions formed over 43 years of listening to the news and reading history books!. If you think I am wrong feel free to counter argue!.

also my use of the word India can be assumed to also refer to the states such as Pakistan which came into being after Indian independence

The first thing to say is that Great Britain did not originally go to India to conquer it!. The original motive for visiting was trade!.

Whilst trading with certain Indian States we were asked to use our armies to protect these states from their marauding neighbours!.

This has been a problem throughout Indian History!. Neighbouring states in a constant flux of alliance and war usually over religion and land rights!.

Over time this did lead, unfortunately, to further subjugation of the native Indians!.

During this time there were many instances of incredible heavy handedness by the ruling classes and also the high ranking Indians who helped them rule over the lower castes!.

I am aware of the fact that effective Apartheid was practised by the ruling classes but what annoys me is the complete lack of credit that is giving to Great Britain for the advances that were made in the infrastructure of the country!.

The other really annoying fact is that we are still blamed for the parlous state of living of many Indians today!.

Whilst under British rule the divisions between Muslim, Hindu and Sikh were not a major problem as far as I am aware!. Unfortunately, immediately after independence, when the British had removed themselves from India in a governing capacity, leaving behind a functioning Government, Justice system, Rail and transport infrastructure, Army, Air Force and Navy, the newly independent Indians chose to start arguing and, in many cases, massacring each other, about their religous differences, perceived slights between lower and upper castes, and where they wanted borders to be to keep the different religous factions separate!.

Wouldn`t it all have been a much better idea to sit down, say "we are all Indians in this together!. I don`t care what religion or caste the guy next to me is, lets build something great out of this wonderful country with it`s hard working populace and desire to better itself"!?

India is blessed with mineral deposits and citizens who, judging by the ones who have come over here, only want to make a better life, yet all we hear over here are stories of scrapping over Kashmir and fights between men who are annoyed that their sister has been spoken to by a lower caste man!.

I hope this answers a few questions!. If you want to discuss it in further depth please message me through yahoo answers and I will answer with my full email to anyone willing to discuss this rationally and without name calling!.

Ray!.

Edit,

To Sircannonfodder!.
It would not surprise me in the least if the sign "No Dogs or Indians allowed" was displayed outside a social club in India!. In my lifetime the sign " No dogs or Irish" was often displayed outside boarding houses!.

I think that the person who has asked this question has done so in an honest attempt to learn about our attitudes!. He or she may well be misinformed about the numbers that died in the Jaliawala Bagh meeting and you have rightly given your opinion but to tell the questioner to read up on history before lecturing others displays a little bit of rudeness that doesn`t need to be there!.

If I was to say to you that you should brush up on your spelling and grammar before lecturing others would you be happy!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
