The were exploring the new Lousiana Purchase and surveying an overland route from US territory to the Pacific Ocean!. The Northwest Passage was a salt water route from the Atlantic to the Pacific over the top of the world, ice choked most of the year!. Global warming will make it commercially feasible in a few years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com O!.K!. bear with me here, I am going way back inot public school, that was mostly in the early '50's so!.!.!. I think that way back when, they were hoping to find a waterway from Mississippi River, by following the Missouri River west, hoping that it would take them all the way to the Pacific Ocean!.
