It began when the U!.S!. declared war on England for the continued impressment of American Sailors, and encourging the Native American population to attack the Americans!. In it's opening stages the U!.S!. Attempted to invade Canada at 2 points, Accross the Detroit river and accross the Niagra river!. Both were unsuceesful and losses for the Americans, See the Battle of Queenston Heights and Fort Detorit!. While England was able to invade the U!.S!. after these early victories, they were unable to resupply themselves in the vast American forests of the Midwest and were unable to take over key U!.S!. forts in Ohio, see Fort Megis,

In the East the balence of Power depended on Naval control of the Great lakes both sides rushed to build fleets them!. The Americans won the decisive battle of lake Erie!. With control of the lakes gone the British attempted to land an Army by Ocean and landed a force outside of Washington D!.C!. They then marched up the Patomac and take over the Nations capitol, aftyer burning it to the ground they headed back to their ships to try and do the same to Baltimore Maryland!. They were defeated by the defense of Fort McHeneryand set sail for the southern U!.S!. and the city of New Orleans!. There they were decisively beaten by Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans!.

So at the end of the War England had lost control of the Great Lakes, had lost the key Battles of Lundy's Lane and Battle of Chippawa!. They had failed to take over Baltimore and were tired of a conflict that was over 2 years old!. On December 24, 1814, diplomats from the two countries, meeting in Ghent, United Kingdom of the Netherlands (present Belgium), signed the Treaty of Ghent!. This was ratified by the Americans on February 16, 1815!.
It basically said no territory was gained or lost in the fighting and both sides had to give up whatever land they had taken over!.

Aftermath:

U!.S!.- Victory, The main reason they went to war was the repeated impressment of their sailors for service aginst Napolean in the English Navy!. Since Napolean was beaten in 1814 the British did not need the sailors anymore so the impressment stopped!. The Americans could also say with pride they beat the best Army in the world in the decisive battles of Chippawa and New Orleans!.

British, Defeat!.!. While technecally no land was lost by the British, they had hopped to take the American Northwest and turn it into an Indian homeland and buffer zone between Canada and the growing U!.S!. Their Navy and Army which had recently beat the Greatest general in Europe had been unable to beat the Americans and the last major land engagement had been a shattering defeat!.

Canada: Victory!. They had repulsed the American attempt to invade their country and showed the first stages of an independece movement not only from England but from the Americans to the south!.

Indians: BIG LOSERS!.!. Their unquestioned leader Tecumseh was killed in the battle of the Thames!. Since most American Indians were allied with the British when the British were forced to leave after the Treaty of Ghent the Indians were left by themselves to deal with a revenge minded nation!. This led to removal from lands and loss of rights!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
