Idea: Gandhi's ideas were founded on principles of non-violence ("Ahimsa") and the pursuit of Truth ("Satyagraha")!.

Idea conveyed to: The subjugated population of India!. In 1942 he started the "Quit India Movement" to force the British out of India!. He got the Indian population to boycott British goods, notably imported textiles!. He promoted the idea of each Indian weaving his own clothes and wearing "Khadi" (a kind of coarse cotton)!.

The Salt March (where hundreds of thousands of people marched to the Eastern seashore to produce their own salt, which had hitherto been prohibited by the British) impressed upon Indians to start upon the road to self-sufficiency and stop depending on British handouts!.

Significance: The British left India on 1947, in part due to Gandhi's untiring efforts and in part because the British were crippled after World War II!. They simply weren't left with the resources to rule such a huge country, especially whilst facing an unceasing freedom struggle !.

His ideals of non-violence continue to inspire great leaders today, most notably Nelson Mandela!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He had several ideas, but the most important was that nonviolent resistance could bring about social and political change!.

His first target was the Indian population in South Africa, but when he failed there, he went to India, where he convinced thousands to join his protests (note in particular the salt march)!.

Gandhi is considered the "Father of India," and I would guess that bringing about the independence of the second largest country in the world would be considered rather significant by most people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
