Magna Carta, literally translate Great Charter!. It was a document of "law"!.!.!.signed by King John in 1215!. It was the first such codified law in Europe where a king agreed to govern and deal with his people in a set and formal manner!. Until then, it was rule by will!. The Magna Carta changed all that!. It became rule by law!. The real significance of the charter isn't that it was ever put into effect, but that, even after being repealed it was revived, not only once but several times!. It also finds significance as a basis for many more later documents!. For instance, the Petition of Right in the mid 1600's!.!.!.that's 400 years after the creation of the Magna Carta!.

Four copies of the original Magna Carta still exist!. All are in England—two in the British Library in London, one in Salisbury Cathedral, and one in Lincoln Cathedral!.

It`s NOT a book it`s a document known as the Magna Carta Liberatum (Great Charter of Freedoms) that has influenced English Law since it`s inception in 1215!.It has had many influences on the Laws and statutes of several countries most notably the Declaration of Independance and The Constitution!.
Contrary to popular belief NO ONE actually signed the original document - it bears simply the Royal seal of King John!.
Many copies are in existence :-
One "copy" is owned by Lincoln Cathedral and displayed at Lincoln Castle ,another at the British Library the only one witth an intact Seal (thought to be the one from the Cinque Ports) ,another in The House Of Lords ,one at Salisbury Cathedral ,Durham Cathedral has three copies ,The Bodleian Library in Oxford has four ,one held by the Australian Government at Parliament House in Canberra ,there is even one in Washington DC LOLWww@QuestionHome@Com

Here's my own rude interpretation of Magna Carta!. It dismissed the king's nonsense and instead started England slowly towards a parliamentary system of government!.

Don't get excited!. This did not suddenly mean we were all going to vote!. Oh dear no!. What it meant for us surfs and peasants was that our masters could no longer simply give us a whipping without first there being a trial thing!.

Of course people were still found guilty and flogged anyway!.
