Question: What propted so many English immigrants to America in the short window period of 1629-1642!?
The vast majority of Americans of English descent trace their ancestors journey to the New World over a short 13 year period between 1629 and 1642!. Granted, the English have come to these shores at all different times in our history, but a lion's share of these immigrants came in this really short time period!. What was going on in England at this time that so many English people emmigrated!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
English government established the Church of England as the only legal religion; all citizens had to pay taxes to support it, and no citizen could be married or buried in another religion!. Initially, the government discouraged colonies, but began to approve them under James I (ruled 1603-1625)!. Puritans immigrated first to the Netherlands, then to the Massachusetts Bay Colony!. Scots Presbyterians immigrated in droves!. Catholics immigrated to the Catholic colony of Maryland (planned from 1625), where all religions were equal!. From the 1629 Parliament onwards, with increasing distrust and finally 11 years before Parliament met again, England was a frightening place!. Taxes increased exponentially! The English Civil War began in 1642 and ended with the 1649 beheading of King Charles I and the Puritan theocracy of Oliver Cromwell!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is not true!. English and British people continued to migrate in large numbers all through the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries!.
Even with your qualification, it is still not true!. You have been misled by the mechanics of ancestry!. The average English-stock American today would have had 2,048 ancestors alive in the period you mention!. If they have one ancestor in America at that time, they forget the 2,047 who were somewhere else!.
The study of the numbers who went on the ships will also show this is the case!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There was a conflict between the King and the Puritans who controlled Parliament that started around 1620 and escalated throughout the period in question, finally resulting in the English Civil War, which ended with the execution of King Charles I and the establishment of a Puritan Dictatorship under Oliver Cromwell, the Ayatollah Khomeni of the 17th century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
