I think Chelsea nailed it, but I might also add something about the phenomenon of extremism!. Malcolm X was sort of seen as an extremist in comaprison to MLK, Jr!. There is a sociological concept that states that extremists are needed in any movement to make the original dissidents appear moderate in the eyes of the public and the government and therefore further their cause by appearing more rational than extremists!. Something to think about, anyway!. But you could argue that his greatest contribution was in "appearing" more violent than King, thus making King's passive resistence appear like a rational plea for equality!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"By any means necessary" was something he said that had been picked up as a catch phrase!. The idea was progress for Blacks by any means necessary!.

I recommend Spike Lee's movie on Malcolm X!. There's also an autobiography that Malcolm X wrote with Alex Haley!. Excellent reading!. Time magazine named it one of the most important non-fiction works of the 20th century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi,
From what I remember reading re: Malcolm X, it was more the fact that he made African-Americans realise that they should stand united rather than divided!. He was far more radical than Martin Luther King Jr in that he felt there should not be any consultation with white people!. He also believed in an all black state or country!. However towards the end of his very short life, he took a more socialist view and believed that workers regardless of race, creed or religion had to unite and stand up for themselves!. Personally I think he gave a voice, a much needed voice, to all those who could not speak for themselves!. He showed that unity brings about change!. There are several excellent books about him!. Check out the SWP website also, as they keep info on him at all times!. He really was an extraordinary man and a fantastic orator!. Good luck with your findings!Www@QuestionHome@Com

He left the Nation of Islam after he went to Mecca and saw people of different colours together!. Then he abandoned calls for violence was probably killed by the Nation of Islam, some say by FarrakhanWww@QuestionHome@Com
