Apart from the obvious parallel facts - Chiang invaded Taiwan, Castro invaded Cuba - both are offshore islands - there isn't much of a parallel!.

*!.!.!.The political systems are different!.
*!.!.!.The economies and import/export regimes are different!.
*!.!.!.China wants to absorb Taiwan, the USA has no such claim on Cuba!.
*!.!.!.Internally, the level of personal freedom, living standard etc!. are different!.
*!.!.!.Relations with the rest of the world are not comparable!.

Unlike Taiwan which was at one time ruled by a neighbouring country, Cuba was for a long time colonised and ruled by a distant power, Spain!. There was a large population of chattel slaves!. Cuba was effectively liberated in 1898 by the USA,

Taiwan became effectively independent without foreign intervention when the then Chinese empire (later republic) collapsed in the 20thC!. This gave Chiang a natural bolt-hole when he lost the Chinese civil war!. By contrast, no refugee government ever took shelter in Cuba!.

The parallel between the two does not really hold water!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ah!.!.!. there's significant differences, though I guess you could say the process was just in reverse!.

In the case of China and Taiwan the nationalist army was defeated by the Communist party and fled to Taiwan!. The Taiwanese government though is by all descriptions a liberal democracy, now at least!. China still considers Taiwan a part of their country, Taiwan and more importantly the US dissagree!.

In Cuba there was also a Communist revolution to overthrow the totalitarian regime of the time, as in any revolution though there are those who don't want things to change and a lot of Cubans ended up fleeing to the US, a lot of them to south Florida!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

China persists in its claim on Taiwan!.
The US had Cuba in 1898, considered statehood or colony status, and instead chose to make it independent!. Of course, it wasn't independent enough, and the excesses of American big business eventually led to a revolution!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
