completely unacceptable!. a way to keep women down (yes, some women rose above it), and to enforce class standards and divisions (only rich women had them and those trying to be rich; country women did not usually have them, and were looked down upon for their regular "humongous" feet)!. notice that none of the men put up with such things done to themselves!?

anyway, lotus feet are over, but painful shoe practices for women certainly are not (take a look at the newest craze out of Japan where the shoes are 'en pointe' like ballet dancers, that is straight up and down, all the time) yeah!. right!. we haven't changed much!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Of course, we consider it gross, but it was a cultural tradition and a sign of wealth!.
It's really unfair, and rather provincial, to criticize customs of other cultures without taking a hard look at your own!. Consider, for example, the tight corsets worn by women in the mid-to late 19th century, into the early 20th!. These actually caused internal damage and caused organs to shift position!. Women fainted frequently because they couldn't breathe properly because of the corsets!. Women wore "hobble skirts" which prevented them from being able to run, or even walk comfortably!. And this is just one example from Western culture!.
