Mt!. Suribachi, though really just a small hill, is the dominant terrain feature on the island!. Moreover, there are no harbors!. Therefore, the Marines landed on the east and had to split forces!. When Suribachi fell, that meant the south end was in US hands (after a little more mopping up) and the entire thrust of the operation could be to the north!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
