It depends on their line of work and how exactly their killed!. For instance, a music artist or actor/actress who is just starting out and is a no one is just going to be killed!. Folks aren't going to be thinking of them as being assassinated since their nobodies!. But a little known or virtually unknown politician killed for what appears to be political resaons is going to be viewed as being assassinated even though their not all that famous!.

By contrast, a famous musician, actor/actress, or politician (think folks like JFK, John Lennon, etc!.) who happens to end up in the midst of say gang violence by accident is going to be said to merely have been killed!. Those that killed them didn't start off with the intention of killing them, thus it's not assassination!.

Intention to kill seems to play a large factor in determining if an individual is assassinated or not!. But intention is not the only thing required!. As already stated, occupation (or societal position as someone extremely wealthy or of nobility but of little to virtually no fame would also fall under this area when determing if they were assassinated) also plays an important line of work!. Certain occupations will require someone to gain more and more fame before someone with the intent to murder them is said to assassinate them!. Whereas other occupations if the intent can be tied to their occupation then it does not matter how famous they are!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would have to say someone who is in the public eye such as an entertainer or a politician,or even a law enforcement official!. But have you ever noticed that if the assassin ATTEMPTS to kill his/her target and fails, the media only uses the first and last names!. IF the assassin is successful, then the media uses first, middle, and last names of the person!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Although high profile individuals are the targets of an assassination, an assassin usually has an ideological or political motivation, though many assassins (especially those not part of an organization) also demonstrate insanity!. Other motivations may be money (contract killing), revenge, or a military operation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not sure, Marilyn Monroe was murdered but they called it suicide!. I guess the more political a person is the greater it may be called an assasination!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There's no tight distinction between the two, but usually an assassination has a political motivation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
