Good leader -- Henry IV of France!. Way ahead of his time in political reforms, support for the lower classes, and religious tolerance!.

I can't think of a really good example of a bad leader, but Spain declined in power under Philip III, and his expulsion of the Moors resulted in loss of intellectual and economic resources!.

The major theme of European history at that time was religious strife between Catholics and Protestants, culminating in the Thirty Years' War!. Significant events around that time were the enactment of the Edict of Nantes in France (1598) and the Gunpowder plot in England (1605)!.

In Japan, 1600 was the approximate time of the establishment of the shogunate which would rule the country for the next 250 years!.

And of course, it was just after 1600 that the English and French founded their first permanent settlements in North America!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
