The North often named a battle for a physical feature of the battlefield, usually a creek or stream!. The Battle of First Bull Run, named for Big Bull Run Creek!. The Battle of Antietam, named for Antietam Creek!. The Battle of Pittsburg Landing, named for a boat landing on the Tennessesse River!.

The South usually went for a town or some man made feature of the battlefield or near to it!. The Battle of First Manassas, named for nearby Manassass Junction, Virginia!. The Battle of Sharpsburg, named for the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland!. The Battle of Shiloh, named for Shiloh Church!.

Of greater intrest is how history often remembers the battles names!. In some cases history tends to go with the Union name for a battle!. Bull Run (Manassas)!. Antietam (Sharpsburg)!. At other times history tends to go with the Confederate name!. Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing)!. Winchester (Opequon Creek)!.

The North by name of city or town because most of the time the battles were covered by the northern press!. They wanted to make it easier for their readers to understand where they occurred!.
