There was substantial damage from the allied forces bombings!. Some coastal towns of Normandy and Brittany were almost completely reduced to pieces when Americans bombed them to rid them of German headquarters!. This was the case of Le Havre, Lorient, St-Malo just to name a few!. If you go to Le Havre and Lorient you'll notice there are only modern buildings built very quickly in the 50's to house the population!. St-Malo was reconstructed in the traditional style so the damage is not noticeable!. Dresden in Germany suffered great damage from the British Royal Air Force bombings!.

As said previously the bombings were against strategic military points, not necessarily against capital cities or famous cities but a lot of churches lost their original windows or had to hide them in cellars in order to preserve them!.

Here is a picture of Caen, Normandy showing the damage after 70% of the city was destroyed and liberated by Canadian forces!.

As for the Statue of Liberty, well, there were never any military operations on American soil (with the exception of the attack on Pearl Harbor)!.

Edit: I realized your question was about both wars, I only answered about WW2 as I don't know much about the first world war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There WAS damage done to a lot of historical places during the Great Wars!.
The Eiffel Tower was miraculously saved!.
The Tower of London with Big Ben was also, but Buckingham Palace and other places DID sustain some damage!.
Many places in France sustained damage, but was not directly bombed for "damage" purposes!.
The Statue of Liberty however was a bit out of the reach for damage during the wars!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

France did not suffer the bombing of its cities for terror reason but (mostly) to destroy industrial activity as well as railway stations!. The Eiffel Tower not being in either of those zones, it escaped unscathed!.
The US never suffered a single bomb on its territory!. No plane of that time could fly to the US and back without refueling, and air refueling did not exist!.
Big Ben was lucky!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Good question

The Continental US never had any major war play!. I have read about a few bombs that went off in the Northwest-like in Oregon or Washington State!. We did have a few subs that came very close to shore, but that's about it!.

To me, Hawaii is a separate subject and the navy was the biggest loser in that attack!.

When I was in Germany I did get to visit some very old churches (in Aachen and Cologne) that were still in place and missed by bombs!.

I'm sure that England must have had substantial historical losses due to the heavy bombings!.

I'd like to hear about the historical losses!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

American was never bombed!. The Germans concentrated on bombing industrial areas!. Famous land marks weren't really a target!. Buckingham palace was hit though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Simple -- none of them were hit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
