One popular misconception of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: people think the Romans made them!. They didn't!.

A Greek, Herodotus, decided to compile a list of Seven Wonders at the time of his existence (484 BC–ca!. 425 BC)!. He was the earliest person to do something of the sort and was later followed by two other people (see extract below)!.

The reason for seven wonders, and not six or eight, was because the Greeks believed the number seven to be magical, lucky, supernatural etc!.

An extract from Wikipedia explaining the Seven Wonders briefly:

"The historian Herodotus (484 BC–ca!. 425 BC), and the architect Callimachus of Cyrene (ca 305–240 BC) at the Museum of Alexandria, made early lists of "seven wonders" but their writings have not survived, except as references!. The earliest extant version of a list of seven wonders was compiled by Antipater of Sidon, who described the structures in a poem around 140 BC!."
