The Alaska Purchase (otherwise known as Seward's Folly or Seward's Icebox) by the United States from the Russian Empire occurred in 1867 at the behest of Secretary of State William Seward!. The territory purchased was 586,412 square miles (1,518,800 km2) of the modern state of AlaskaWww@QuestionHome@Com

Alaska was considered Seward's Folly!. The Secretary of State, William Seward, purchased Alaska for $7!.2 million from Russia in 1867!. Folly because it was considered a waste of money for a worthless wilderness!. Now imagine how much of a folly it must have been considered after the discovery of gold in the 1890s!. Not to mention the discovery of oil in 1968!. Bet after the 1890's it was probably Eduard de Stoeckl, Russian Minister to the US, and Czar Alexander II's folly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
