The swastika has been around for a loooong time, since cave painting days, and used by many many cultures!. It was generally considered a symbol of good, and was even adopted by Hinduism and Buddhism!.

It was adopted as the sign of the Nazi party in the 1920s!. In that guise, it has become a symbol of hatred and racism!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well until the nazis stole it it was a chinese symbol--ironically the one for happiness!. It was banned after the nazi's used it for their symbol!. also it was a native american navajo, symbol for "whirling winds" but was rejected after they learned about the nazi's use!.
also a religious symbol, widely used in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism!.

The "real" swastika is thousands of years old, found in Aryan (the real Aryan), Buddhist and Roman cultures!. Facing forward it means life!. Facing backwards, as the Nazi form does, it means death!. I just saw some beautiful Bhutanese fabrics with Swastikas woven in--it's a shame that we can only associate the symbol today with Nazism!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it is a symbol of the sun and has been in Europe for about 4000 years as evidenced by rock carvings of this date!.!. i own several celtic brooches (genuine) from the early centuries AD and BC which have swastika forms!.
