That depends upon how you look at it!. If you mean the US specifically, then it began as soon as the US began, with the ratification of the Constitution in 1789!. If you mean, as I suspect, when did black slavery start in the British colonies in America, the ones that would eventually become the US, that would be 1619, when the first black slaves were brought to Jamestown!.

The previous two responders list 1654 as the date of the beginning of black slavery, but that is not correct!. By 1654 slavery for life had become legalized, but de facto slavery had existed since 1619!.

Regardless of when it began, it ended, of course, with the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, on December 6, 1865!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
