Question: When the U!.S!. dropped the atomic bomb in Japan, do you think they deserved it!?
Personally, I think they deserved it because they gave the conqered countries hell of a time!. they forced them to use only speak Japanese, raped women, and tortured or killed people who protested or spoke a different languageWww@QuestionHome@Com

First, "deserve" has nothing to do with it!. The use of the atomic bomb was justified because:
--the Japanese refused to surrender in early August after Potsdam!.
--they had repeatedly sent the message that they intended to fight to the bitter end!.
--they had begun killing all POWs with the intention of killing every single one (so waiting 2-3-4-5- months wasn't a real wise option if you wanted any prisoners to return alive)!.
--a land-based invasion would have resulted in millions of deaths for both sides!. For those who pooh-pooh that, consider this: the casualty rate for Japanese forces once they were on the defensive was between 98-100% (at Okinawa we captured about 6,000--the most in any campaign in the Pacific until their surrender)!. And consider this: 1/4th of the population on Okinawa killed themselves a the urging of the Japanese military (because they believed the lies that we would torture or rape all civilians)!. An invasion of the Japanese mainland would have been horrific!.

Second, the Japanese are estimated to have killed over 30 million people (the vast majority of them civilians and the vast majority of those Asian)!. They conducted medical experiments, they sent bubonic plague to (via balloons) to the United States, enslaved approximated 200,000 females as "pleasure women" and between 37-45% of all POWs died in their camps (while about 1% of allied POWs died in German camps)!. The Japanese practiced warfare on a barbaric scale!. But one doesn't then respond with what someone "deserves!." Instead, it's about winning the war, not administering justice (which in this case would inherently be arbitrary)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"Deserved it" seems a little strong!. The problem is that the atomic bomb didn't just hit a military target, it hit two cities full of people--men, women, children, babies, old folks--that didn't have any more say in going to war than most civilians do when their countries do that!. So a lot of people were killed and injured that had nothing to do with any cruelty practiced by Japanese soldiers!.

The argument for using the bomb is that many more lives, both American and Japanese, would have been lost if we had invaded Japan and fought in the traditional way to subdue the country and end the war!. I have no idea whether this is true!. Either way, war is terrible and people who are innocent die and suffer and lose people they love!. Who deserves that!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Absolutely!. The Japanese military killed almost 40 million people!. FDR's son, not without provocation, suggested Japan be depopulated by about a like number before the final invasion, if need be!. Japanese leaders suggested a loss of 20 million in the invasion of their mainland would be a reasonable and sustainable cost!. Losing about 2!.5 million overall, and no more than about 200,000 to the two atomic bombs used (Tibbets had a third ready to go) was something of a bargain for them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know if anyone "deserves" that kind of thing!.!.!. for one thing, it's not the japanese PEOPLE who are making the choices to invade other countries!. It's the government, however, it's the PEOPLE who died in that terrible way and suffered!. Is if fair to punish the people of a country for it's government's decisions!?
I wouldn't want to be punished for the US government's decisions!
The only reason I think the abomb was an OK decision was that we didn't really have other choices to end the war fast and limit casualties!. The war had gone on for so long in Europe and in the Pacific, we needed to stop it and bring people home!. The US saw no other choice but to use it!.

That doesn't make it good or the right thing to have done, (or moral or ethical) but looking back it is easier to judge than when you have to make that decision!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

By that rationale we should drop a NUKE in MOSCOW because they did worse on post WWII Europe!. (rape, torture, and killed MILLIONS)
No I would strongly disagree!. The nuke on Japan might have helped to end the war and spare lives!. But it remains very much inmoral!. And that is why, it was the first, the last, and the only time EVER a nuke was used as a weapon against people!.
CheersWww@QuestionHome@Com

I think no!. Because all of those horrible things did soldiers and Japanese government, but regular people who lived in JAPAN were innocent victimsWww@QuestionHome@Com

it is not a matter of deservation,to end up the war with minimum American casualties they had to do it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, those are all true, and also a land invasion would've had increased casualtiesWww@QuestionHome@Com
