Stalin did take an active role in the Civil War!. He fought in and around the city of Tsaritsyn (Later to become Stalingrad), with mixed results!. He also refused to moved to Kuibyshev, even when Moscow was under German artillery fire!.
But he never visited the front, even faking some visits for propaganda films / photos!.
