Initially, the US got involved helping to support the Viet-Minh fighting against the Japanese occupation of IndoChina during WWII!. After the end of WWII, the US supplied and operationally assisted France in trying to take back IndoChina from the Viet-Minh and other groups!.

The period from 1954 until 1963 the US publicly had military advisors in South Vietnam!. In 1954, the US began to support the emporer Bao Dai until the US had him ousted in a military coup d'etat in 1955 by the Diem brothers, who in turn were ousted in another military coup d'etat in 1963!.

From 1963 to 1969 the US sent in at least 500,000 combat troops and other personnel!. From 1969 to 1973, US policy was "Vietnamization), meaning the South Vietnamese were to take on responsibility for the ground war!. US participation officially ended in 1973, but the North Vietnam invaded and conquered South Vietnam in April, 1975!. This brought the war to an end!.

Related issues are Communists coming to power in Cambodia (the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot) and in Laos!. Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979 toppling the Khmer Rouge and installing their own government, ending the genocide there!.

The Vietnam War was a significant event in US history-especially for the baby-boomer generation!. It probably led to the beginning of the end of the US as a political, economic, and military power!. It divided the country and continues to do so, especially among baby-boomers!.

Baby-boomers are probably the most spoiled, pampered, self-serving, egocentric generation this country has ever produced!. They make up the majority of the political, cultural, economic, and academic leadership in the US!. Their biggest crime however, is their negligence of their parents and their children!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
