I am pretty sure he was not a Freemason!. I am Catholic and I am a Freemason!. The Catholic church is split on Freemasonry!. It is no longer grounds for excommunication, however some bishops and priests still will not give the sacraments to a Freemason!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

not according to the Famous Freeman web site!. as an aside there is nothing preventing a Catholic from joining the Free and Accepted Masonic Fraternity because I know several Catholics who are Masonic Brothers!.

the Knights of Columbus which was founded by a Catholic Priest is very similar in it's operation to the Masonic Fraternity's Knight Templar!. several times both have gotten together to help, aid and assist each other in doing good and charitable works!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, Catholics are never accepted as masons!! Check out
Christopher Tolkien's biography on his father!.
While some catholics are masons, they run the risk of excommunication!. Freemasons are considered to be a secret society by the catholic church!. At least, that is what I was told by the parish priest 30 years ago when I attended a catholic primary school!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is no evidence to suggest he was!.

There are lots and lots of Catholics who are Freemasons, including, presently, Priests, Bishops and Cardinals; and, in the past, at least 2 PopesWww@QuestionHome@Com

Tolkien was a Catholic, so I doubt he was ever a Freemason!. He would have been excommunicated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
