Question: Why did Britain go to war with Germany on 1940!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Because Neville Chamberlain sent an ultimatum to Hitler stating that if he invaded Poland then we WOULD go to war, on September 1st 1939 that's exactly what Hitler did and so we were forced to go to war in order to keep our word and stand up for the minnows of Europe who Hitler was annexing imperialistically!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe that they declared war in 1939 and immediately sent out an 'expeditionary force' to try to save the French!. They were obliged to do so because of a military alliance with France, and of course they could see that they were next and prefered to battle it out on the mainland!.

Of course the French were quickly defeated and the British expeditionary force had to run back to England leaving most of their equipment behind and only managed to do so because the Germans slowed their advance and a HUGE armada of every kind of boat imaginable went accross the channel to rescue them!.

The next couple of years were essentially a stalemate with the Germans being almost invincible on the ground and the British having control of the seas!. The resulting 'Battle of Britain' is where they duked it out in the air to try to get the upper hand!. That also ended in a stale-mate more or less but the Germans needed a convincing air victory and they didn't get it and so they couldn't invade and that gave Britain the chance to rebuild its forces to continue the war!.

OK, I'll shut up now!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
