The South tended to name the battles after the cities that they were in, and the North named them after landmarks like rivers and such that they were fought on!. Because of this, many battles have two names!.

An example is the battle of Antietam!. The North named it after Antietam Creek, a river!. The South named it the Battle of Sharpsburg because it was fought in the city of Sharpsburg!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
