Hsuan Tsang asked for permission to travel to india in 629 AD, but the chinese emperor refused!. This was becoz the emperors of that time wanted to keep china aloof from the rest of the world!. They didn't like foreigners coming to china!. They did not like foreigners coming to china!. They did not want the chinese to go outside china either!. so, he set off from china secretly from the westward end of the Great wall!. He spent 5 years at the Budhdhist university of nalanda!.
