Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Battle of Berlin was the final battle in the European theater of World War II, fought from April 16 - May 2, 1945 between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany!. At that point the Nazi regime was close to collapse and most of Germany had been occupied by the Allied armies!. Adolf Hitler and some of his closest henchmen took shelter in an underground bunker (the Fuhrerbunker) underneath Berlin as Soviet forces surrounded and then stormed the city!. The Soviets took the city block by block in brutal fighting!. As they closed in on the Reichstag (the seat of the German government), Hitler and his mistress Eva Braun committed suicide in the Furherbunker!. The Soviet Red Flag was raised over the Reichstag building on April 30, and Berlin was captured on May 2!. Nazi Germany signed the final surrender in Reims, France on May 7, 1945!.

The Battle of Berlin was one of the bloodiest battles in history!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Battle of Berlin was one of the final battles of the European Theatre of World War II!. In what was known to the Soviets as the "Berlin Offensive Operation", two massive Soviet army groups attacked Berlin from the east and south, while a third overran German forces positioned north of Berlin!.

The battle of Berlin lasted from late April 1945 until early May and was one of the bloodiest battles in history!. Before the battle was over, German dictator Adolf Hitler and many of his followers committed suicide!. The city's defenders surrendered on May 2!. However, fighting continued to the north-west, west and south-west of the city until the end of the war in Europe on May 8 (May 9 in the USSR) as German units fought westward so that they could surrender to the Western Allies rather than to the Soviets!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Greetings! All of these answers are good, but if you really want to know what transpired during the Battle of Berlin, I can recommend two books!. The first, "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich" last chapter called "Gotterdammerung" explains in detail the battle of Berlin from the Perspective of Hitler in the Bunker!. Another great book to read is called, "The Fall of Berlin" by Anthony Read and David Fisher!. "The Fall of Berlin" focuses primarily on the Russian army's Perspective!.

Hope that helps!. Take care!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Russians called it "Berlin Offensive Operation"!. The Allies part in it was called "Battle of Berlin (air)"!.
The Russians did the actual legwork!. U!.S!. General Dwight D!. Eisenhower saw no need to suffer casualties in attacking a city that would be in the Soviet sphere of influence after the war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
