Here are some features of the American way to fight:

-- The American Army is very well equipped;

-- The American Army uses very advanced technologies; the American fights a material war!.

-- Organized and capable of enormous deployments of armies, fleets and material;
(currently 150000 soldiers are currently fighting on the other side of the planet!.)

-- The US is usually fighting with Allies: not every country can do this!.

-- The war is ideologized (motives, we defend freedom, or justice, we are the good guys); it is important to win the ideology aspects first!.

-- American soldiers are courageous;

-- Military strategic options and plans are discussed openly;

-- The American Army does not treat the enemy with brutality(usually); but this is changing!.

That depends!. The American way of starting war generally involves something thought to be in some way a threat!. This doesn't always include national security per se, but also often economic interests!.

During times of peace a standing army is especially a burden on any elected, tax conscious government!. The government then looks for ways to reduce this cost, to obtain the most bang for the buck!.
A common response is to reduce the amount of gun powder in bullets and an emphasis on marksmanship, one bullet, one enemy!.
PS- Delayed stress syndrome is real but in part is a cultural ritual!. During the Crusades the Christian forces faced the Hashishans!.
