Shakespeare, himself, was a member of Lord Chamberlain’s Men, a touring theatre company!. It is likely that his pre-1599 plays, of which Romeo and Juliet is one, were
performed in a rented facility called the Blackfriar!. This was supposedly the indoor
theatre where winter plays were performed because it was enclosed and patrons could be
dry and warm there!.

The Globe, where most of Shakespeare’s works were performed was originally an open air establishment!. So, to present entertainment year-round, the Winter Season Playbill was moved to the Blackfriar!. These theatres, both the Globe and the Blackfriar, had many incarnations!. In fact, Lord Chamberlain’s Men dismantled and moved the pieces of the Blackfriar down and across the Thames when the landlord was away on business!. On the
new site, they hobbled together what became the famous Globe!. The “move” was in 1598; first plays presented in 1599 here!.

Tickets!? Everyone attended theatre in Shakespeare’s Britain!. Some sources say that the common people and “undesireables” could buy crowded standing room exposed to the
heat, wet and cold for one penny!. Moving up the social ladder, some patrons paid
two cents for the privilege of sitting down!. A cushion for the seat cost yet another penny!.

Shakespeare was the first huckster in history!. He sold his plays to those in his audiences
who could read!. These books were called “penny copies”!. This designation referred to price!. His scripts, labeled octavo++ editions+, were some of the first
massed produced, low-cost, portable books sold in this manner!.
