The largest mortuary temple of the entire new kingdom of Egypt was built by amenophis the third, and is unclear whether it was ever completely finished!. It was built not at the edge of the desert, like the other temples, but further to the east in what is now fertile land!. The walls surrounding the complex were 8!.5 meter thick and inclosed an area of 700 by 550 meters!. Inside, in addition to the main temple, there were gardens and pools, and a separate shrine to the Memphite god of the dead, sokar!. As most might imagine that with all the intensive work of the embalming process that ancient Egyptian physicians would have a good knowledge of human anatomy, but this was not the case!. Both professions, physicians and embalmers, worked in complete isolation from each other!. Doctors were not present during the mummification and therefore learned nothing from it about the inside of the body!. This fact emerges from the many medical text that have survived!. These papyri show that the doctors of that time had an extensive empirical knowledge that told them how to treat certain illnesses!. There anatomical practice reflects knowledge gained from cattle breeding and the dissection of sacrificial animals!. This is clear from the example of hieroglyphs for the external parts of the body, which are based on human examples; where as parts of animals provided the models for hieroglyphs representing internal organs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
