Question: When did George Calvert name Maryland!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
In 1632--it was Terra Mariae, originally, named in honor of Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I!. The grant, however, was made to Calvert's son, Cecil!.

Since "Terra Mariae" means "Mary Land," and because of the unfortunate resemblance of "Mariae" to the name of a certain Spanish individual who, apparently, caused a lot of trouble for the English, "Mary Land" became "Maryland!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
