In the meantime, having researched this topic for several living history events and wiping myself in a variety of historic settings, I can say the top contender is nothing more than a piece of scrap cloth!. Paper comes in second!.

TP was invented in 1856!. It was sold as flat sheets with the maker's name watermarked on each sheet!. The TP in question was medicated and intended for those who had a case of the piles (aka hemmheroids)!. TP rolls come later on!.

Try wiping your heiny with a corncob and see how many grins you get!. I'd never use leaves!. You might as well crinkle them up and sprinkle them on you!. Pine cones!? Have you seen how they are constructed!? If you are that maso, go ahead!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Seriously!. Just because there was no such thing as toilet paper does not mean they did not have paper!. They just used books and newspapers, and leaves, and pine cones, and moss!.
