Stonehenge was built long before any druids were in Britain; infact it was a ruin when their cult flourished!.
It was begun in neolithic times and continued with modifications through the bronze age!. 200 people were cremated & buried in holes inside the bank in the earliest phase!.
The blue stones were the first stones brought to the site and they were from the Presceli mtns of Wales!. bringing them would be an enormous feat, as the builderswould have to travel through treacherous waters and unknown territories!.
The big sarsens are from Marlbrough downs 20 mi away!. They weigh up to 40 tons!.
Stonehenge isn't the only stone circle but its the only one anywhere to have lintels on top!. these are not just lying on top of the stones but are hooked in by mortice-and -tenon joints!. This makes it unique in the world!.
It is also famous for its alignments on the midsummer sunrise & winter solstice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

t!. ogrady is only partly correct!. It is the older, inner circle of spotted blue dolorite stones which came from West Wales, not the huge ones!.

I suspect that they already existed as a stone circle in the Preseli mountains of North Pembrokeshire, and were moved to the religious site at Stonehenge, possibly for political reasons or for religious ones!. Stonehenge was enlarged several times over a period of many centuries!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The rocks were from the Welsh area - I think up north, near Holyhead - scientific research has shown!. No one knows how it was built though!. It would have taken exceptionally strong people and a very long time to carry those huge boulders half way across a country!.

Why was it put where it is as well!? Why couldn't they have the same religious sun light etc!. in Wales!? It remains a mystery and probably will always remain a mystery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
