His nephew Arthur, who could claim the right to the throne!. Arthur died, and many people thought back then that John killed him or had him killed!.

The Welsh were a problem, too, mainly because they were being led by Llewellyn Fawr, Llewellyn the great!. He managed to unite Wales, not an easy task, and was a serious threat!. But John had married off his daughter to Llewellyn, and so neutralized the welsh threat to some extent!.

The greatest threat to John may also be said to have been himself!. Other kings had been abroad much of the time, for wars and crusades and what not!. So the barons back home had been ruling themselves much of the time!. But John did not go abroad!. Instead, he travelled around his country, holding courts, judging, assessing, ruling, taxing, and generally making a nuisance of himself to his independent-minded nobles!. His father, Henry Plantagenet, did the same, actually, so he probably learned it on his father's knee, as it were, lol!. John has been much maligned, and no doubt he wasn't everybody's cup of tea!. But the noblemen who opposed him weren't exactly white as the driven snow, either!. When they rebelled and made him sign the Great Charter, it was as much out of egoism as anything else!. They disliked being supervised!. Which is understandable, of course!.
