I'll try to give both sides of the argument!.

It was inevitable: Capitalism vs!. Communism (natural conflict), tensions over the second front controversy during WW2, America's natural disdain for Communism dating back to 1920's and the first Red Scare, they were the largest world superpowers (thus a natural conflict for sole supremacy), tensions over the A-bomb (by bombing Hiroshima, America showed its ability to get close to Russian shores), and tensions over the "Iron Curtain" and Russia's desire to turn Poland into a buffer state for the USSR!.

It wasn't inevitable: There was no actual need for arms race (no war actually broke out between the two powers), Truman was extremely (and perhaps unnecessarily) anti-communist in order to stay true to the voters, the Soviets had a very high level of paranoia after Germany backstabbed them, Gen!. Patton (along with other military personnel) was hostile to the Soviets for no good reason, America and Russia could have fostered a relationship of trust and mutual benefits following a decisive victory over the fascists and the Japanese!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
