1!. The French colonial empire reached about 1,000,000 square km!.
2!. The total population is pretty much unknown but France itself had 40 million inhabitants, so it is safe to assume that the Empire added another 40 millions or more!.
3!. France was a democracy and a republic but most of the people from the colonies as well as women couldn't vote!.
4!. There was no official religion in France in 1913!. But most of the European population was catholic!.
