I think it means he was determined to keep the Union together!. He wasn't going to be president of just the Northern states, but of the North AND the South!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It means he would not let the south suceed from the union!. When he was elected the 16 th president the south attempted to leave because they believed that he would abolish slavery which he did in due time!. He kept the union together thru the cival war no matter what the cost in human life or monetary meansWww@QuestionHome@Com
