Yahoo Answers is a pretty big community so when you say "we" you should identify yourself as an American!. There are active members from Mexico to India who had nothing to do with the fire bombing of Dresden!. As to your use of the word holocaust you may have it technically correct but your use is wrong within a historical context!. Holocaust (with a lower case "h") does in fact mean the death of a large number of people but the context has always been used to apply to a group of people that NO FORMAL DECLARATION of war had been declared!. For instance when Winston Chruchill used it to describe the attempted genocide of the Armenians in WW1 or the Germans attempted genocide of the Jews in WW2!. The fire bombing of Dresden does not meet that important requirement!. Such as the dropping of Atomic weapons on Japan would not be considered a holocaust!.

Dresden and Hiroshima and Nagasaki all could be considered horrifying maybe even war crimes but a holocaust!? Sorry but no!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am not sure it would qualify as a holocaust!. The word holocaust is greek!. Holos (completely) Kaustos (burnt)!. However I believe that in contemporay usage the term refers to genocide that is completly or nearly completly carried out!. An example would be the Nazi attempt to exterminate the Jews in Europe and the Ottoman Empires attempt to wipe out the Armenians between 1915-1917!. The nazis killed between 6 and 7 million jews between 1933-1945!. The Ottoman Empire wiped out 1!.5 million armenians between 1915-1917!. These were attempts at completly eliminating an ethinic group from the planet!. Dresden was bombed by the RAF and USAAF between Febuary 13-15th, 1945!. It is estimated that there were between 25,000 and 40,000 civilan casulties during those dates!.Thus not everyone or even nearly everyone in Dresden was killed nor was there an attempt to kill all of them!. The target of the bombing was a military/industrial complex and rail targets!. Unlike the nazis and the ottomans the deaths were incidental to a military opperation!. Thus the bombing of Dresden was not a holocaust!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The 'impress Stalin' hypothesis has never impressed me!. (According to some accounts, even Hiroshima and Nagasaki were done to impress Stalin - eveidently someone believed he needed a good deal of impressing)!.
