Question: Goethe's influence on people!?

In a few sentences, in what ways did Goethe's work, Faust influence others at the time it was written!?

What kind of political ideas were around at the time Goethe lived and what effect did Goethe's work have on them - i!.e!. how did ideas around his time effect the later unification of Germany!?

And btw, I have looked on wikipedia - just looking for some brief historical ideas from someone who knows a bit about this!.!.

Sorry, all I know about Goethe is that he was some kind of renaissance man who was talented in both science and the arts!. He must have lived at the time of the Holy Roman Empire which Voltaire pointed out was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire!. If he lived at the time of the Enlightenment and during the revolutionary period of the eighteenth century maybe Faust is a metaphor for all that!. Scientific and political advance a kind of Faustian contract!?
