all three ships were built to the highest standard their respective countries could do!. All were cutting edge for their day!. The Yamato remains the biggest battleship with the biggest guns ever!.But that's a little like saying it was the biggest dinosaur!. seems like the bismark and tirpitz were used better!. the Yamato and her sister ship Musashi did contribute to various campaigns but do not seem to have given the Americans the same trouble that the tirpitz and bismark gave the british, but then the pacific war was very different the from the one in the atlantic!. the links provided give all the data for comparison any mortal could want!. I encourage you to review them and come to your own conclusions!.remember that the term best is always relative and is not necessarily relevant to reality- the germans with the "best" tanks and air force got clobberized in the war!. I note that the comparisons include french ships (such as the Jean Bart) and italian (such as the Littorio)!.

Both the Bismark and Tirpitz were actually utilized in WW II: justified the costs of their construction!. Where the Yamamoto wasn't!.

The Bismark's over-all tactical prowess, was the envy of all the allies; and she actually destroyed one of the British most honored naval vessels: the "Hood"!. And most probably would have survived, had it not been for a "freak" stroke of good luck: the disabling of her rudder, by a torpedo of an outmoded carrier plane!.

The Yamamoto, as you probably know was the largest battleship ever built, and put to sea only twice if I recall correctly!. She was obliterated in the only battle in which she engaged: greatly shaming the Japanese, who had spent a fortune on her construction!.

All three were vastly superior to any that the allies had, up until the last year of the war, when 3 or 4 of the so called Iowa class finally put to sea!.

Yamato was the biggest battleship EVER built!. It had the most tonnage!. It had 18" guns designed to have a range that would let it sink any other ship before that ship could get close enough to fire!. It was considered unsinkable and unbeatable in ship-to-ship combat!. BUT it never got the chance: the Japanese kept it in port until the end of the war, then sent it unescorted on a suicide mission when it was sunk by American aircraft (torpedoes & bombs), never actually having the kind of battle it was made for!.
Bismark & Tirpitz were smaller & lighter!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yamamoto was a guy!. The ship you want is the Yamato

The Yamato was a huge ship but it seems to have been poorly made- especialy the 155 mm turrets were a bad idea!. What sunk it was a fire in one of these turrets!.

The Bismarck was well made and beat the Hood and the Prince of Wales (both were no match in design and in training) but ended up sunk after a fight with 2 "real" battleships - King George V and Rodney

best!? worst!? who can tell!? in those times one lucky shell could make all the difference!. Training and gunnery range were assets which could be eliminated by bad weather (look up the sinking of the Scharnhorst) or a weaker radar

All in all the Bismarck is at least par with the best of the Brit and US ships!. Yamato- despite its size- seems a poorer design!. Nothing can be said about the French or Italian ships- they didn't really fight!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think they were about evenly matched and, had the not been on the same side!.!.!. it would have been anyone's battle!. The Bismark was the most powerful battleship in the world when she was launched!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
